The lyrics to Foo Fighters became a topic of conversation during Dave Grohl on Kelly Clarkson . The singer and presenter showed herself to be a big fan of the group and wanted to better understand the inspiration behind some of the band's lyrics – and discovered that "Learn To Fly" isn't as profound or poetic as she imagined.
After analyzing the meanings of “Everlong ,” the band leader commented on how each person understands the lyrics differently. “I believe music is made to heal, right? So one of the things about a song is that you connect with it and find yourself in it, you can identify with the lyrics or the pain… So, it’s the greatest luxury of my life to be able to sit down with an instrument, write something, go out and play it for a group of people,” Grohl reflected. “And they sing along with me. And it could be 50,000 people, singing the same words for 50,000 different reasons. They’re not singing for my reasons, they’re singing for their own reasons.”
Clarkson then commented that she admires the chorus of "Learn To Fly" for bringing a mix of light and darkness to the emotions, showing these two forces that exist in the world at the same time. At that moment, Grohl looked at her with a funny expression and warned: "I don't want to burst your bubble.".
With the presenter ready, the singer blurted out the information all at once: “At that time, I wanted to become a pilot! I wanted to learn to fly! That's what I wanted to say, just that, I wanted to learn to fly. I'm sorry!”, he revealed. “That's what I'm talking about: I'm singing because I want to learn to be a pilot! You're singing because you're so inspired and all that. I wanted to fly and I thought: 'Wait, is there math involved? I can't do that'”.
The singer's reaction was one of complete shock. "Oh my God, it's so literal! I was like, 'Oh my God, I was feeling that…' and you were just talking about wanting to fly," she laughed.
